Eco-Friendly Hotel Amenities: A Procurement Guide for Sustainable Hospitality
Switching to sustainable guest amenities reduces environmental impact without compromising guest experience. Here is how to evaluate eco-friendly options across packaging, materials, and supply chain.
The hospitality industry generates significant single-use waste through guest amenities — from plastic-wrapped toiletries to synthetic slippers discarded after a single night. As regulatory pressure increases and guest expectations shift toward sustainability, procurement teams must navigate the transition to eco-friendly alternatives without sacrificing quality or inflating budgets disproportionately.
The largest volume category and often the first to be addressed:
- Refillable dispensers replacing single-use bottles (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion). Wall-mounted ceramic or stainless steel dispensers eliminate thousands of plastic bottles per property per year. - Solid bar alternatives — shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and body bars packaged in compostable paper or cardboard. - Natural-ingredient formulations — plant-based surfactants, essential oil fragrances, and formulations free from parabens, sulphates, and microplastics.
- Bamboo toothbrushes replacing plastic handles (bristles remain nylon in most cases but the handle is compostable). - Corn-starch combs that biodegrade within 90 days in commercial composting. - Recycled-paper packaging for dental kits, shaving kits, and vanity sets. - Wooden or paper ear swabs replacing plastic-stemmed cotton buds.
